I have visited Rome’s Piazza del Popolo on several occasions over the past 38 years, and have taken numerous photos there. As it turns out, most of my visits have been in the afternoon, and I have simply walked around the broad, open plaza to photograph whatever interesting sights and people presented themselves. (For photos from a morning visit, see Sunday morning at Piazza del Popolo, Nov 2009).

On this most recent visit in November 2010, I arrived in the city on a Sunday morning and looked forward to another photographic expedition to the Piazza. But it rained all day, and it let up for only a few minutes on Monday afternoon. I walked through the drizzle over to Piazza del Popolo, and settled myself in at the outer edge of a cafe on the corner of the piazza just as the rain started up again at the official hour of sunset (not that anyone in the area would have known when that was going to be), and sat there for another hour as the rain intensified.

There were lots of umbrellas, of course, though not always as colorful as I would have expected. Indeed, it was interesting to see how many people went about their business as if there was no rain at all …

In any case, this is what I saw … you can decide for yourself if it was noteworthy or not.
