In their words:
“Stripcreator is a website that allows users to create and save their
own comic strips.”

Looking for ways to spice up your presentations, or keep an audience
engaged? Strip Creator allows you to make your own 1, 2, or 3 panel
comic strip in a matter of minutes. In order to save the comics on
the site, you will need to create an account, but you do not need an
account to play with the creator. I like sites that will let me try
the product before I sign up so I can decide if it is worth creating
another password to remember.

The controls for creating a comic include choosing the characters,
background, narration, dialog and thoughts for each panel. You can
also split panels (which counts as a background, so you can’t use
another background with it) and use the character slot on one side or
the other for a prop or to show the passage of time/space. There are
some restrictions on which art can be used for public distribution as
outlined in the Frequently Asked Questions page. However, you can use
any of the artwork for strips that are stored only on the Strip
Creator website.

The public forums allow everyone to showcase their best pieces, so you
can review some before starting on your own. They also have top voted
strips on the home page. Two of the attached screenshots are from the
front page of the site. Each strip can be shared directly to Facebook
or Twitter so you can show off for all of your friends or spread the
word about a great comic. I also tried my hand at one, but as you can
see from the NYC strip, it is not easy being funny in this medium, so
give yourself some time to learn the ropes before you publish.

There are a ton of backgrounds and crazy characters available. Try
out some talking dinosaurs or knights and wizards. Have your audience
create and share strips of their own to help illustrate a point.
There are many ways this site can be used and most of them will be fun
for everyone. The barrier to entry is low, but be careful showing
popular strips to your audience because they may have mature language
or content. The profanity filter is defaulted to on, but it doesn’t
catch mature language on the forums or homepage if it is outside of an
actual strip.

This is a guest post by Chris Bulin (@Arduanne), a graduate student
assistant at the Taubman Health Sciences Library.

[PS - Patricia has been collecting a ton of comic strip generator
tools, and will be co-teaching a session on this with Johnathan Beals
at Enriching Scholarship in May. Watch for it! More cartoony goodness
coming!]
